While drinking plenty of water is good for your overall health, it has actually never been clinically shown that drinking excess water is linked to an increase in skin hydration. The water does not make it to upper layer of the skin called the stratum corneum. Any excess water is eliminated through your kidneys.

Usually dryness is from a impaired skin barrier and from lack of lipids (oils) on the skin. Excess use of exfoliators, retin-a, and acids can disrupt the skin barrier leading to transepidermal water loss (TEWL) which dehydrates the skin. When lipids are stripped from the skin by harsh products, the skin becomes less elastic, rigid and seemingly drier. Aging also contributes to low oil production as a result of a decrease in hormone levels. Moisturizers that contain ingredients like triglyceride esters make the skin less rigid and give a hydrated feel to the skin.

Avoid harsh cleansers, hot water, alcohols, and harsh ingredients to keep your skin in good health. Replenish oils and moisturize regularly to avoid TEWL. And do drink your water for overall health!

Visage MedSpa recommends Epionce Skin Care Products. Dermatologist Dr. Carl Thornfeldt developed Epionce to calm chronic inflammation while repairing and strengthening the skin barrier. The Lytic products encourage cell turnover to cleanse the pores and reveal smoother, more clear looking skin without stripping the skin barrier. The flagship product, Renewal Facial Cream, hydrates, strengthens and repairs the skin barrier while hydrating with botanical oils and promotes collagen synthesis.

Retinoids, Vitamin C, and Peptides are highly effective skin care products. However, it’s important to know how to use these products. It's worthwhile to introduce these ingredients into your care, and we'll tell you how.

Vitamin C

This important skin antioxidant is becoming more and more popular and finding a product with a stable vitamin C in high concentration is no longer difficult, however, using them is a bit tricky. Serums and other products with concentrated Vitamin C should be introduced slowly, starting from once or twice a week, observing the skin reaction. Don’t combine these products with other active ingredients on the same days - assign vitamin C, acids and retinoids on different days of the week in or use different products in courses: 1 month of Vitamin C, 1 month of acids, etc.

Before applying a serum with Vitamin C, cleanse the skin and make sure it’s clean and free from other products. Finally, before going outside always apply a good sunscreen. Otherwise, anti-aging properties of the Vitamin C will disappear, plus your skin will be more sensitive towards the UV light.

Retinol stimulates cell renewal and the production of its own collagen. It is best used in the evening because the sun will weaken it’s properties and make your skin more sun sensitive. Like with Vitamin C, after exposure to retinol, sunscreen is mandatory: your renewed skin becomes more sensitive to ultraviolet radiation.

If your skin is prone to dryness and reacts to creams and serums with retinol - don't rush to give up this strong remedy. Additional moisturizing will, most likely, counterbalance its renewing effect.

Peptides are the most peaceful and friendly ingredients for mature skin, increasing the production of collagen, restoring the skin after damage and even able to work as muscle relaxants (thanks to which it’s possible to prevent facial wrinkles). Despite the complexity of the formulations, the products with peptides are practically incapable of producing unexpected irritations, inflammations, and allergic reactions. They also work well with many active ingredients without losing effectiveness.

Peptides are not recommended to be used simultaneously with AHA-acids including Vitamin C (acidic pH is undesirable for peptides). Use peptides and vitamin C serum at different times of the day or on alternate days.

We all want to keep our skin young looking. Brown spots, wrinkles, broken capillaries age our faces. The skincare market is flooded with expensive creams, lotions, and potions claiming to make our skin look and feel younger. But do you know that the best way to keep your skin young looking is in an inexpensive cream? It's sunblock! Prevention is key to "anti-aging". Sunspots, wrinkles, and even broken blood vessels are all caused by the sun! Use your sunblock every single day. Rain, shine, summer, winter, even if you don't plan on going outside. And don't forget to reapply. If you wear make-up there are tinted powdered mineral sunblocks that you can dust right over your make-up.

If you have already neglected your skin, Visage MedSpa has treatment options to help to reverse the signs of sun damage and give your skin a fresh start.
